The Rope Break #13:

NXT Takeover Brooklyn 3 Predictions

Hey now! It’s Summerslam weekend and though the big show may be on Sunday night, the better show (possibly) will be on Saturday night with five great matches from NXT. Now these prediction thingies don’t always work out so well for me, as I tend to rely more on my emotions, quite often, and less on my common sense when making them. So let’s see how much I muck this one up and get right down to it!

Andrade Cien Almas VS. Johnny Gargano: Almas has really stepped things up a bit lately, especially with the seeming focus that his new manager, Ms. Vega has brought out in him. Not to mention the aggression he has displayed recently, as well. I’m glad to see Almas getting some wins and he could easily score yet one more Saturday night. Which wouldn’t be a bad thing, honestly. The problem is that he is going up against the recently returned, Johnny Gargano. Gargano has just come back to NXT after taking some time to heal up following the vicious, post-match attack by his former Tag Team partner, Tommaso Ciampa.  Gargano is the consummate underdog and plays that role very well. So, Johnny pulling out a win over the currently on “Fuego”, Almas, wouldn’t be that much of a shock. A part of me really wants to see Almas get yet another win, this time on a larger stage at Takeover, but my gut says that Johnny Wrestling is going to steal this one. Of course, on a side note, I also wouldn’t be very surprised if Gargano wins only to fall victim to a sneak attack from Ciampa from out of nowhere.

Hideo Itami VS. Aleister Black: Remember just a few paragraphs ago, when I said that I let emotion get in the way of logic? Well, here I go: I love Aleister Black (Tommy End, if you’re nasty) and I love everything that has been done with him, so far, in NXT. His entrance music, the entrance itself, his demeanor and character and his in-ring talent has all proven to me that we are undoubtedly looking at a future Champion. Though, that championship may have to wait until he heads to the WWE Main Roster. Which is where he is unquestionably bound, maybe sooner rather than later. With all of that said, though, Hideo needs a win. Itami turned full heel a while back and since then has been on a bit of a tear in NXT. Yes, I know that Black has been undefeated so far in NXT. But, what better way for Itami to truly make a statement and begin to lay a good foundation for his heel –run, then to put an end to that streak. Another thought keeps plaguing me here, as well: There have been some rumors running around that there will be another Draft amongst the rosters happening some time following Summerslam. One of the side rumors there, is that NXT will be involved with the Draft, potentially both gaining and losing some talent to and from the Main Roster. I think Black could get a call up relatively soon, if that were to happen. So, his streak might not be really matter soon enough and Itami, who I see staying in NXT a bit longer, probably, could use the boost.

Sanity VS. The Authors of Pain (NXT Tag Team Championships): I have been waiting for Sanity to get their act together and start working as a unit with some kind of real goal for a while now. What better way to do that, then to focus on the NXT Tag Titles? The NXT Tag division is a bit weak, right now, so pitting Sanity against the seemingly unstoppable Authors of Pain, seems like the most logical choice. And, Sanity has come off strong lately, ambushing The Authors and convincingly beating them down. Now, The Authors aren’t necessarily slouches here. They have been completely dominate and have shown improvement in each and every big match that they have had, so far. So, I do have high hopes that this will be a good, hard-hitting and entertaining match. So, who wins it? Well, I’ve got to go with Sanity. I’m assuming that the lineup will possibly be Killian Dane and, maybe, Wolfe, though if Eric Young is in there, that won’t be too bad. I mean, who knows? Maybe Big Dane-Mo, won’t be in the actual match at all and it’ll be Young and Wolfe? See, that is why Sanity is going to win it, that’s the unpredictability that they bring to the game. That chaos factor both inside and outside the ring, will hopefully be enough to topple The Authors. I’m also hoping to see Nikki Cross get involved somehow, as well, because everything is always better with a little Nikki Cross in it.

Ember Moon VS. Asuka (NXT Women’s Championship): The “Empress of Tomorrow”, Asuka has held the NXT Women’s Championship for five hundred-plus days at this point. One of the longest title reigns of the modern era. A reign, which I think, could be in jeopardy Saturday night. Recently, Asuka has begun to display weaknesses more and more frequently in her higher-profile matches over the last few months, which should be a clear indication that her time may be running out. On the other hand, Ember Moon has gotten a heck of a push to the top of the NXT Women’s division, which was unfortunately brought to a screeching halt with a nasty shoulder injury. But, even throughout that, the spotlight has still been firmly fixed upon her, which leads me to believe that she is the heir to Asuka’s throne. This could easily be the “show-stealer” match of the night. Asuka is almost always on her game and Ember has improved greatly since her debut and has proven that she can go. Another thing that is swaying my logic here are those rumors, again, about an upcoming Draft between all three brands. Asuka would be a fantastic addition to either RAW or Smackdown’s Women’s divisions, especially RAW where the division has thinned a little due to Bailey’s injury. This would be the perfect stage for Asuka to take her bow and move on to bigger and undoubtedly better things.

Drew McIntyre VS. Bobby Roode (NXT Championship): The “Glorious” NXT Champion, Bobby Roode has been leading the way and taking on all-comers since winning the title a while back. Now, he runs into a familiar face and competent challenger in Drew McIntyre. McIntyre was released by WWE the other year and did a hell of good job reinventing himself and reigniting his career. The guy looks great both physically and in the ring. He’s even gotten a bit better on the mic, which is a definite plus. Yet, with all of that improvement, I just don’t think it’ll be enough to topple Roode. Roode is the best heel NXT has currently and works so well as the gatekeeper to the top spot there. Granted, I’d love to see Roode drop the title and possibly head to the Main Roster, but I feel that the Main Roster is currently bogged down with big name heels and I feel Roode might be lost in the shuffle, right now. So, NXT is the best place for him, at least for the foreseeable future. Maybe after the next Wrestlemania Roode can make the jump. And, if that were to be the case, I don’t see him dropping the NXT Championship until just before getting that call-up. Drew, on the other hand, is someone that I could easily see getting the nod anytime now and possibly movin’ on up. I’m sure Roode will do something screwy, as heels are wont to do, in order to retain. Maybe we’ll even get a run-in of some kind by Roddy Strong? Though, I do hope that things won’t end with a DQ or what-not. But, I guess I could see that possibly happening. At any rate, there won’t be any title change happening here.
