The Rope Break #23: NXT Takeover: War Games Predictions!!

By Curtis Suthard – 11/17/2017

Well, hello there. It has been almost an entire month since we last convened here on Nerdnationradio.com to talk about some good old-fashion ‘rasslin and it’s time to remedy that. Now, unfortunately, Papa’s got himself a nice persistent head cold and is typing this up between naps. So, excuse me if this one is a bit short and to the point. I’m sure some of my faithful readers will actually be happy to hear that. I’m going to bang this one out and then down a bottle of Nyquil. So, without any further preamble, let’s just get down to business.

NXT Takeover: War Games Predictions

Five fantastic matches round out this card, all leading to the rebirth of the classic WCW match: War Games. It actually really works with this being the lead-in show to WWE’s Survivor Series and the team/Brand warfare that we will get Sunday night. Some of these matches seemed a little wonky at first glance, with some odd pairings. But, I’m honestly looking forward to Saturday night a tad bit more than Sunday night. Which is the way it always seems to be with an NXT Takeover.

Kassius Ohno VS. Lars Sullivan: So, speaking of wonky, there’s this one. I love Ohno, but, really? He’s been relegated to taking on giant nutcase, Lars, who has been beating opponents down left and right lately. Makes sense though, since Lars has been improving and needs a solid rival to help build himself up that much more. Expect plenty of hard-hitting shots, plenty of elbows and some surprising displays of both strength and agility from both of these men. Everything in me wants to go with Kassius as my pick to win, but I just think that a win for Lars would be better for the big man, than it would be for Ohno. It will lead to more confrontations between these two and help establish Lars as NXT’s resident monster.

Velveteen Dream VS. Aleister Black: I like Velveteen Dream! There, I said it. He’s the perfect combination of the look and athleticism of Johnny B. Badd, mixed with the attitude and presence of early Goldust. I dig it. Unfortunately, he’s coming up against the power of Black. At first, I had no faith in this rivalry being all that interesting. But, within moments of their first confrontation, where Velveteen interrupted Black’s monologue and Aleister kicked the mic out of Dream’s hand, only for Velveteen to not back down, I was hooked. Everything Aleister (Tommy End, if you’re nasty!) has done since debuting in NXT has been great. I firmly believe he’s primed to make that leap to the Main Roster and make his mark. On the other hand, Velveteen (Patrick from the last Tough Enough, if you’re nastier!) has improved in leaps and bounds since his earliest incarnation in NXT. His in-ring skills are good. His look is great. The character is fun and different. Unfortunately, Dream just isn’t on the level with Black. At least not at this point. I look forward to more coming from this feud, but cannot imagine a world where Aleister Black gets laid out by Dream.

Kairi Sane VS. Nikki Cross VS. Ember Moon VS. Peyton Royce (Fatal Four-Way NXT Women’s Championship): Oh boy, this was a tough one to make a pick. I like all four of these women and feel like they all deserve the NXT Women’s Championship. So, let’s just break this down: Right off the bat, Mae Young Classic winner Kairi Sane is probably the odds on favorite to take the win. Maybe it’s the comparisons that have been made between she and former NXT Women’s Champ, Asuka, that have led to this? But, as good and talented as Kairi is, she isn’t Asuka. Asuka had a whole different vibe to her. One of intimidation and confidence. Kairi has the confidence down, she just doesn’t ooze with it, like the Empress of Tomorrow does. Kairi is awesome and really fun to watch, but I just don’t see her getting the title this quick. Now, Nikki Cross on the other hand, brings the crazy and is great. I love Nikki and feel like she really deserves the title, after all of the great matches she has had so far in NXT. I’m just not quite sure she could carry on very long as the Champ, at the head of the division. Next, Ember Moon, has worked her butt off to improve and has also had some really solid matches throughout her tenure here in NXT. I was pretty sure that following her loss to Asuka at the last Takeover, Ember would have gotten the nod to head up to the Main Roster. Fortunately, she stuck around and could be a great Champ. And, then, there’s Peyton Royce, possibly the underdog in this match. The only real heel and the only one of these four women who will have some back-up in the form of her best friend, Billy Kaye. Billy could easily provide just the right distraction, at just the right moment, to help Peyton secure the win. Not only that, but Peyton is a solid worker in the ring and could make a great heel Women’s Champion. This is a tough one, but I think I got it. Going out on a limb here…

Andrade Cien Almas VS. Drew McIntyre (NXT Championship): I thought this was an odd pairing, but I ain’t complaining. Andrade has deserved the spotlight for a long while, after languishing in the mid- to lower mid-card of NXT. Now, since the introduction of Ms. Vega, Almas has been showing just what he can really do in all of his Rudo glory. Does this mean that he has a chance of taking the title off of McIntyre this quickly after he won it on the last Takeover, just a few months ago? No, probably not. Drew is probably set to be the NXT Champ right up the time that he makes the jump back up to WWE’s Main Roster. Now, that could be sooner, rather than later, but I just don’t see it being now. Drew is a great champ and can easily carry on as the face of the brand for the foreseeable future. I am still holding out some hope for a really solid match with Almas getting a win and the title, but my brain will not allow my fingers to type his name as my pick. Damn you, foul longtime wrestling fan logic!

The Authors of Pain & Roderick Strong VS. Sanity VS. The Undisputed Era (War Games Match): What a lineup of talent in this match, huh? Let’s just stop and take this in for one minute: three teams consisting of guys like Roderick Strong, Bobby Fish, Kyle O’Reilly, Eric Young, Big Damo and Adam Cole (BAY BAY!) are all competing in the revival of a match from WCW’s past on the WWE Network. Let that just sink in for moment…. Anyway, who do I think takes this one home? Well, for me it was an easy pick. The Authors of Pain have already been rumored to be set to move up the ladder to the Main Roster and I still firmly believe that it is only a matter of time before that happens. They are also teamed up with Roddy Strong, who seems to be unable to build any momentum right now in NXT. For every win the guy gets, he loses two or three more. So, I don’t see those guys walking out victorious. So, that leaves Sanity and Undisputed Era. Now, Sanity have the NXT Tag titles and have been on a bit of a tear, finally. That was before the Undisputed Era started targeting them. It’s all leading to Fish & O’Reilly VS. Sanity, with Bobby & Kyle probably walking out with those titles. Maybe not in the first meeting, but eventually they are taking the Tag titles off of Sanity. So, it seems that my pick should be relatively obvious then. The Undisputed Era are currently running the show and this win will only cement them as the “Top Guys” in NXT going forward.
